"That's what has been in America and you seem to want to turn it around and stop it".

A conversation between Steve Bannon, president Donald Trump's former chief strategist, and CBS News' Charlie Rose grew particularly tense during a discussion of the role of immigrants in USA history and today's society, with Bannon accusing the journalist of using a "leftist" talking point by arguing that Americans are "all immigrants".

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon railed against a number of Washington's power players during a Sunday night interview on "60 Minutes".

ROSE: So in this case the media was right? "I mean, we totally embraced the establishment". "It is completely indefensible", the Republican governor said. "That's a brutal fact we have to face", Bannon continued.

"They're idiots, and they've gotten us in this situation, and they question a good man like Donald Trump", he said.

And, Bannon said, Governor Chris Christie, who served as a campaign adviser overseeing Trump's transition plan, lost a likely spot in the president's Cabinet because of his response to the video. "Because directionally I think it's a very different investigation".

"I am a street fighter": The ousted White House chief strategist said his media image of being a "street fighter" was pretty accurate. "Our whole campaign was a little bit the island of misfit toys".

"If you're a Republican congressman or senator and you spin yourself into a tizzy over Trump's latest tweet or what he does here or there when you're not tending to your own business by passing legislation, I think Republicans look at that and they say, 'You guys need to get stuff done". I've gotta really staff up something. I don't need to be - I don't need to be lectured by a bunch of - by a bunch of limousine liberals, OK, from the Upper East Side of NY and from the Hamptons, OK, about any of this.

Appearing on CBS News' 60 Minutes, Bannon spoke with interviewer Charlie Rose about a number of subjects, including Republican legislators, immigration, and the politics of White House staffing.

Trump himself told reporters last month he hasn't given firing Mueller any thought, despite people close to him telling the media that the President was considering it.

"But maybe modern political history".

Bannon, in a rambling interview with CBS News "60 Minutes", acknowledged that if Trump had not fired Comey, there would be no special counsel investigation into Russia's interference in the USA election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

Bannon went on to elaborate that he believes Washington is a "city of institutions, not individuals" and that "I don't believe that the institutional logic of the FBI, and particularly in regards to an investigation, could possibly be changed by changing out the head of it". We would not have the Robert Mueller investigation.

But even he sees the disaster that has emanated from the decision to fire the man who had been in charge of the Russian Federation investigation. "It's a waste of time", Bannon told Rose. In Bannon's case, "Some of my best friends are minorities" has effectively been replaced with, "Some of the people I've been exposed to are minorities".
