California is poised to become a so-called "sanctuary state" after its legislature passed a bill Saturday that would establish new protections for people who are in the country illegally and send a clear signal of defiance against the Trump administration's tough approach to immigration enforcement. Lawmakers reached a deal on the proposal after resistance from law enforcement officials and Gov.

The bill also gives protections to inmates who are immigrants, allowing them to reduce their sentences by completing educational or rehabilitation programs, and ensures that schools, hospitals, libraries, and courthouses remain safe spaces for undocumented immigrants.

Leaders of the state Senate and Assembly praised the work of the Legislature in remarks after the final gavels fell in both houses.

"With SB 54, California will meaningfully improve state law to keep families together and communities whole-and not a moment too soon as the Trump administration continues its draconian and indiscriminate crackdown on immigrants". Jerry Brown. Brown has until October 15 to sign or veto legislation. It also prohibits law enforcement officials from being deputized as immigration agents or arresting people on civil immigration warrants.

The legislation, which might never make it into law because it still has to be signed by the governor, is authored by state Sens.

Hurricane Irma leaves devastation and disrupts travel in the US
Martin was in the direct path of then-category 5 Hurricane Irma on Wednesday, the Washington Post reported . Others familiar with the storm's effects at Mar-a-Lago, including Trump employees, remember it differently.

Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon, D-Los Angeles, introduced SB54 shortly after Trump's election to cut off most interactions between federal immigration agents and local police and sheriff's officers.

But the law has backers too: San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, who simply called it "a reasonable streamlining bill", and Oakland Mayor Libby Schaff, who said in August, "We need to plan and prepare for accommodating diverse populations and more dense development in our existing footprint".

"If California politicians pass this bill, they will be prioritizing politics over the safety and security of their constituents", Homan said in a statement this week.

A federal judge in Chicago ruled Friday that Attorney General Jeff Sessions can not follow through with his threat to withhold public safety grant money to so-called sanctuary cities for refusing his order to impose tough immigration policies.
