Luther Strange, R-Ala., Friday night in Huntsville, Trump, however, made no mention of McCain's latest remarks, instead focusing on the Arizona senator's vote against an earlier health care bill.
"Rand Paul, or whoever votes against Hcare Bill, will forever (future political campaigns) be known as 'the Republican who saved Obamacare, '" Trump warned.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY applauded McCain's decision. Bill Cassidy, R-La., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. Sen.
McCain, who cast his "no" vote in July just days after being diagnosed with an aggressive brain cancer, said he could not support the bill without knowing how much it would cost and how it would affect insurance coverage, adding that both parties would do better to work together on legislation.
This latest repeal and replace plan has yet to be reviewed by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, making it hard to know the plan's full impact.
While President Donald Trump tweeted Saturday that Paul "may find a way to get there for the good of the party", there is limited optimism on that front on Capitol Hill. Trump said. "Alaska had a 200% plus increase in premiums under ObamaCare, worst in the country".
McCain said in a statement that he can not "in good conscience vote for the Graham-Cassidy proposal", saying he favors a collaboration between Republicans and Democrats instead.
The GOP plan would overhaul Medicaid, end the individual mandate requiring everyone to have health insurance or pay a penalty, and convert the Obamacare individual marketplace into a program by which states would get federal grants to craft their own health care initiatives.
In a surprise statement, McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, said: "I can not in good conscience vote for the Graham-Cassidy proposal".
The White House "just wants a legislative victory, they're not as concerned with the policy" in the bill, Paul told the Associated Press after Trump's tweet. Republican Senate leadership can only afford to lose two votes to pass Graham-Cassidy before 30 September. McCain's rejection of the Graham-Cassidy proposal effectively ends the party's chances at repealing Obamacare - for now. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and McCain. Rand Paul, significantly hurts the GOP's latest plan to repeal and replace Obamacare.
The bill sponsored chiefly by Sens. Last week, she said she was leaning against Cassidy-Graham. He's not a fan of the bill, but reports say he's open to negotiating. "So I think Senator Paul associated health plan married up with our bill changes health care", he said. Two Republicans have so far said they oppose the measure. Collins and Murkowski were the other two Republicans who opposed McConnell's bill in July. Murray said in a statement, though, that they "identified significant common ground" but GOP leaders chose to "freeze" the bipartisan effort and push the party's own plan. A third would be enough to defeat the bill, since no Democrats are expected to support it. Republicans hold a 52-48 advantage in the Senate. The Maine moderate also criticized a provision letting states make it easier for insurers to raise premiums on people with pre-existing medical conditions. States that expanded their Medicaid programs, including California and NY, would face the biggest cuts, while Texas and some states in the Deep South and West would fare better.
Certain unpopular features of the ACA, such as the individual mandate which requires every USA citizen to have healthcare would be scrapped, as well as fines for employers who do not provide healthcare for their employees. A vote taken any later than that would have to garner at least 60 votes for passage.
The legislation, which might never make it into law because it still has to be signed by the governor, is authored by state Sens. Lawmakers reached a deal on the proposal after resistance from law enforcement officials and Gov.
