Brandis criticises Abbott's 'bizarre' call to ban Macklemore 'gay anthem' at NRL

  • People want to stop Macklemore performing 'Same Love' at Rugby final

U.S. music artist Macklemore has been accused of politicising the NRL Grand final by performing one of his biggest hits during his much publicised halftime set.

Attorney-General George Brandis has fired back at former prime minister Tony Abbott's demand for the NRL to ditch Macklemore as its Grand Final entertainment. "Imma go harder, imma love".

He told USA radio that he was going to perform the song at the "Superbowl of their rugby" as Australia underwent "interesting times". The song was an anthem for same sex-marriage rights.

In a true Donald Trump "I don't like this person so I'm going to pretend I don't know them and that they're not successful as if everybody and their mother didn't hear Thift Shop 114 times per day in 2012" move, senator Pauline Hanson also commented on the news on Sunrise.

"Macklemore was chosen as the Grand Final act because he is now one of the top acts in the world", a spokesman told the ABC.

Mr Abbott, a vocal same-sex marriage opponent, said the National Rugby League (NRL) should not be politicised.

Macklemore (here performing in California in May) is set to perform is "gay athem" at this Sunday's NRL Grand Final. "The fans would not expect anything less".

It is especially pointed because it will be performed while Australia is conducting a postal survey on whether same-sex couples in Australia should be able to marry.

"He's playing four of his biggest hits, one of those will include that song and we're very comfortable with that", Mr Greenberg said. "I thought Mr Abbott believed in freedom of speech", Brandis said.

Mr Wall said he and his family, and other NRL fans who did not support same-sex marriage, would feel uncomfortable watching the grand final if the song were to be performed.

"So I'm getting a lot of tweets from angry old white dudes in Australia who I think there was a petition today to ban me from playing it".

However, Rugby League fans have voiced their anger over the rapper's decision to sing the song, and have even launched a petition to ban the song from being performed.
