  • Is Abu Bakr al Baghdadi still alive? ISIS chief's new audio message sparks speculation

This image made from video posted on a militant website July 5, 2014, purports to show Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi delivering a sermon at a mosque in Iraq.

Three months after Russian officials said there was a "high probability" Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi had been killed in an airstrike, an Islamic State media outlet released an apparent audio recording of the IS leader, the AP reports.

Officials have said they believed it could take years to capture or kill Baghdadi as he is thought to be hiding in thousands of square miles of sparsely-populated desert between Mosul and Raqqa, where drones are easy to spot.

It was not clear when the message, released by the ISIS-affiliated Al-Furqan media group, was recorded.

And the voice on the recording matches the voice heard on earlier Baghdadi recordings.

In the recording, the voice purported to be that of Baghdadi called on the jihadis of ISIS to continue the fight despite their loss of Mosul in northwestern Iraq.

The United States has offered a $25 million bounty for information that would locate Baghdadi.
