OJ Simpson freed from prison after nine years

Simpson was granted parole at a hearing in July and his earliest release date was set for October 1, but he had widely been expected to be freed no earlier than Monday.

O.J. Simpson was released from prison in Nevada early Sunday morning after serving nine years for a 2007 kidnapping and armed robbery in Las Vegas. "To ensure public safety and avoid possible incident", Keast said, commenting on Simpson's release at eight minutes past midnight local time (0708 GMT Sunday).

Following Sunday's release of O.J. Simpson, the former National Football League star and current criminal indicated he plans to move to Florida, but not if Attorney General Pam Bondi can help it.

It seems like a belated effort by Florida to put the wheels in motion to keep Simpson out of the state, given that he becomes eligible for release as of Sunday.

His legal team said this week that he was just looking forward to the "simple pleasures" of eating steak and buying an iPhone on his release.

Long-time friend Tom Scotto attended Simpson's parole hearing in July and when he was released, he told CNN that Simpson is "going to focus on his kids, friends, family and golf".

No media were near the front gate at the time when Simpson's auto left the prison by a back road and entered nearby Interstate 80, she said.

The Florida Department of Corrections, however, said officials had not received a transfer request or required documents, and the attorney general said the state didn't want him.

In a video on the New York Post's website, Simpson spoke from the back of a white SUV at a gas station the newspaper said was in Amargosa Valley, Nevada, about 90 miles (145 km) northwest of Las Vegas. Two of the men with Simpson in Las Vegas carried handguns, although Simpson still insists he never knew anyone was armed. The trial involving OJ Simpson at the time was known around the world.

Bondi included in her letter the Florida statute that says parolees do not have the right to move out of state and receiving states have the right to reject or accept parolees.

"She's the attorney general, she has nothing to do with it", Lavergne said.

The former Buffalo Bills star was acquitted in 1995 of murder charges in the 1994 killings of his Brown Simpson and Goldman. The families of the victims were awarded $33.5 million after a civil suit was filed when Simpson was found not guilty. Many other people characterized it as payback for his acquittal in the Los Angeles murder case.
