In total, they analysed genetic data from 275,000 women, of whom 146,000 had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Mutant versions of the two genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 have by far the biggest impact on breast cancer risk. It should also help to identify more effectively the women with a high risk of suffering from such a cancer, but also to reduce the screening to be unnecessary and over-diagnosis.

"(Saturday's) event was a moving example of passion in action", said Kathryn Tucker, American Cancer Society Community Development Manager, in a news release announcing the figures.

Professor Doug Easton from the Centre for Cancer Genetic Epidemiology and a Fellow at Homerton College, the University of Cambridge - one of the lead investigators on the study - says: "These findings add significantly to our understanding of the inherited basis of breast cancer".

Possessing a broken version of either of these genes is thought to account for as much as 10 percent of all breast cancers, and about 15 percent of ovarian cancers.

By analysing the 180 regions of the genome where are located some of the variations that predispose to breast cancer, it will be possible to determine the risk of a woman developing this cancer.

The proclamation was read by Commissioner Bobby Jackson, who lost his wife to breast cancer in 2006 after an 18-year fight against the disease.

Each of them increased slightly (from 5 to 20 %) risk of getting cancer of the breast, however, a woman can be a carrier of several of these variations.

Others, known as oestrogen-receptor negative, are not affected by the hormone and are more hard to treat.

As healthcare providers, one of our responsibilities is counselling regarding lifestyle modification and adopting a healthy lifestyle and spreading awareness, both among the general population and breast cancer survivors.

"Information on these variants could be combined with other strong breast cancer risk factors, such as age, family history and mammographic density to provide more precise estimates of risk", said Associate Professor Roger Milne, epidemiology director of Cancer Council Victoria.

"We get grant funding through pharmaceutical companies and donations like the New Brunswick Fire Department", said Dorothy Reed, president and co-founder of the Sisters Network "It's hard economic times for everyone so when somebody just gives you a donation it's really a blessing".

Yet breast cancer is still one of the most deadly forms of cancer for many women in the United States, coming second only to lung cancer for some demographic groups.

"Some of the variations are protective, others increase the risk".

She hopes the research might lead to less harsh and more effective breast cancer treatments.

Another seven genetic variants predisposed women specifically to oestrogen-receptor negative breast cancer, which often had a poorer prognosis because it did not respond to standard drugs such as Tamoxifen.

Professor Chenevix-Trench said a greater understanding of a particular woman's risk of developing breast cancer could help to change the age at which she was offered mammogram screening.
