Democratic lobbyist Tony Podesta is stepping down from his lobbying firm Monday after becoming a subject of investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Podesta says he was quitting because of the criticism he's been getting over the special counsel investigation, according to The Washington Post, telling employees "it is impossible to run a public affairs firm while you are under attack by Fox News and the right wing media".

The powerful Podesta family's troubles came into view Monday with lobbyist Tony Podesta's mysterious resignation.

Tony Podesta, the brother of Hillary Clinton's former campaign manager John Podesta, told staffers and clients of his Podesta Group lobbying firm that he is stepping down after he became part of Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation. According to Politico, the firm recently lost some clients, and brought in $4.8 million in the third quarter of 2017, down from $6.1 million in the third quarter of 2016.

Their work included lobbying "multiple members of Congress and their staffs about Ukraine sanctions, the validity of Ukraine elections" that the reasons for imprisoning Yulia Tymoshenko, the political rival of Russian-backed Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. Carlson also reported that Manafort's company, the European Center for a Modern Ukraine, was a major client of the Podesta group.

"The Podesta Group has fully cooperated with the special counsel's office and taken every possible step to provide documentation that confirms compliance with the law", the company said in a statement. The spokesperson told ABC News that the Podesta Group "filed the appropriate public disclosures of its representation" of the nonprofit group called the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine in 2012.
