  • Both Bush presidents bash 'blowhard' Donald Trump as unfit for the presidency

"And I'm not too excited about him being a leader" the senior Bush told historian Mark Updegrove, for his new book The Last Republicans. "I don't know much about him, but I know he's a blowhard", said Bush, now 93.

Former President George W. Bush also spoke ill of the current president, saying: "This guy doesn't know what it means to be president", CNN reported. "It was because Donald Trump represented everything that the Bushes abhorred", Mr Updegrove told CNN.

The elder Bush went on to say that he believed Trump was motivated by "a certain ego" that would ultimately be damaging to the Republican party and the country".

In "The Last Republicans", Mark K. Updegrove chronicles an era that feels nearly dated in today's reality-show politics, when the Republican establishment controlled the party and Washington, and when a single family could occupy the presidency and vice presidency for a combined 20 years.

Bush Jr had launched a blistering attack on Trump last month, without naming him.

"If one Presidential candidate can disassemble a political party, it speaks volumes about how strong a legacy its past two presidents really had", the White House wrote in a statement to CNN. I always liked him, but I didn't like him so much for a while because I thought he hurt George.

All of us are together, so it's not like I have to sit each one down and say, 'OK, when you grow up, or when you have a baby'. However, after breaking the news, the interviewer assured readers that "after a long pause. she reassures me she's joking".

George W. Bush, on the other hand, left the top of his ballot blank because he didn't want to vote for Clinton, saying that she has "bad judgment". The two men, who served in the White House for a combined 20 years, revealed their assessment of the new commander-in-chief and the state of the Republican Party under his leadership in a new book.

CNN reached out to both former presidents' offices for further comments and they both confirmed that they had spoken with Updegrove on the record, but as a policy do not comment on books. "Donald Trump is everything that the Bush family is not".

However, at one point during the 2016 presidential campaign, the younger Bush confided to the author, "I'm anxious that I will be the last Republican president".

Speaking to the George W Bush Institute, he said: "Bigotry seems emboldened". George HW Bush said he voted for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, while his son told Mr Updegrove he did not vote for anyone.

Neither the 41st or 43rd presidents voted for Mr Trump in the election.
