Despite stark rhetoric over North Korea's nuclear and rocket tests, US President Donald Trump said on Sunday he believed North Koreans is "a great nation", DPA reported.

And while the foreign minister acknowledged that some of Trump's rhetoric had raised anxieties in South Korea, she stressed that her government was focused on the president's "overall tone". While Trump will be looking to use his trip to strengthen Washington's alliance with Seoul and reaffirm their joint push to maximize pressure on North Korea over its nuclear program, he will also be faced with several thorny issues weighing on the relationship.

Abe and Trump, following a second day of meetings, confirmed that North Korea has been the dominant topic of their discussions.

Trump has taken to Twitter using strong verbal threats to dissuade Pyongyang from their continued efforts to produce a fully-functioning nuclear powered inter-continental ballistic missile. "We will not stand for that, the era of strategic patience is over".

"Some say my rhetoric is strong, but look what's happened with weak rhetoric over the last 25 years", the president said, criticizing the approaches of previous USA administrations.

He said in an open letter to Mr Trump: "Please kindly be reminded that a large number of underground Christians are within North Korea".

Speaking in Tokyo, Trump denounced Pyongyang as a "threat to the civilized world" and demanded that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un halt development of nuclear weapons and missile tests, some of which have been fired over Japanese airspace.

It was not pleasant for them, was it?' said Trump, who wore a leather bomber jacket as he addressed the troops. The "start of something very special".

Abe announced new sanctions against North Korean individuals, but Trump will face a major challenge in pressing China to step up economic and diplomatic pressure to isolate North Korea.

Trump's trip comes amid escalating tensions with North Korea, which has continued to pursue its missile and nuclear programs and ramped up its missile testing.

A U.S. ground invasion of North Korea could cost "millions" of lives, a new military report has predicted amid growing tensions between the U.S. and the hermit nation.

This vulnerable group, Mr Park said, would be the first to suffer in the event of an escalation in the conflict on the Korean peninsula.

North Korea makes frequent claims that the United States is seeking to reignite full-scale conflict.

North Korea's recent actions, including several missiles that overflew Japan and Pyongyang's sixth and largest nuclear test, have raised the stakes in the most critical global challenge of Trump's presidency.

North Korea says the situation strongly requires the country to bolster its nuclear deterrent and "the USA should not expect us to make any changes".
