Twitter Erupts Over 280 Character Tweets: '140 Characters Closer to Armageddon'

As Twitter tests new 280-character tweets, two Germans exploited a loophole in the popular social network site and sent a massive 35,000-character tweet, breaking the existing limit.

The firm also said that people who partook in the trial said they felt more satisfied with how they expressed themselves on Twitter, and the ability to sift through content.

When Twitter revealed it was testing out a larger character limit in September, many users grew concerned their feeds would clog with much longer tweets, including from the country's tweeter-in-chief.

Twitter today has announced that it will be raising its character limit from 140 to 280 for all users.

Twitter has been slowly easing restrictions to let people cram more characters into a tweet.

The company says 9 percent of tweets written in English hit the 140-character limit. Long-form tweeting is now the standard for everyone, and the changes are in the process of rolling out to all users.

Canalys: Smartphone Shipments Decline in China, Huawei Remains the Top Smartphone Manufacturer
Smartphone sales in China may be down 5% year-on-year, but four of the five top-selling brands saw growth in Q3, reports Canalys. Chinese smartphone shipments registered another quarter of decline as the market contracted 5% in Q3 2017 to 119 million units.

Ever since Jack Dorsey sent out his first tweet in March 2006, Twitter (TWTR) has been synonymous with a pithy 140-character limit.

Twitter says this often results in lots of time spent editing and, at times, abandoning tweets before sending.

Picked at random, it granted five percent of its users to 280 character tweets.

Twitter claims that the changes are a good thing (because of course they're a good thing), because "only" 5% of tweets with the 280 character limit exceeded 140 characters and only 2% were over 190 characters. It was a temporary effect and didn't last long.

Twitter's latest move is a watershed moment for the publicly traded company, which posted better-than-expected earnings and revenue growth during its most recent quarter but struggled with sluggish user growth in more recent quarters. We expect to see some of this novelty effect spike again with this week's launch and expect it to resume to normal behaviour soon after'. We'll continue listening and working to make Twitter easier for everyone while making sure we keep what you love.
