Twitter Erupts Over 280 Character Tweets: '140 Characters Closer to Armageddon'

As Twitter tests new 280-character tweets, two Germans exploited a loophole in the popular social network site and sent a massive 35,000-character tweet, breaking the existing limit.

Twitter has been slowly easing restrictions to let people cram more characters into a tweet.
The company says 9 percent of tweets written in English hit the 140-character limit. Long-form tweeting is now the standard for everyone, and the changes are in the process of rolling out to all users.
Ever since Jack Dorsey sent out his first tweet in March 2006, Twitter (TWTR) has been synonymous with a pithy 140-character limit.
Twitter says this often results in lots of time spent editing and, at times, abandoning tweets before sending.
Picked at random, it granted five percent of its users to 280 character tweets.
Twitter claims that the changes are a good thing (because of course they're a good thing), because "only" 5% of tweets with the 280 character limit exceeded 140 characters and only 2% were over 190 characters. It was a temporary effect and didn't last long.
