With Ezekiel Elliott presumably out, the Dallas Cowboys will turn to running backs Alfred Morris, Darren McFadden and Rod Smith to carry the load and replace Elliott's heavy production.

Last week, the court granted the running back an administrative stay that allows him to play and practice until the court rules on the appeal.

The U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday denied Ezekiel Elliott's and the NFLPA's request for an emergency injunction pending appeal in Elliott's case. According to SI.com legal expert Michael McCann, that means Elliott might have another ruling before the six-game suspension ends.

A series of injunctions and restraining orders have allowed Elliott to play to this point, but a three-judge panel decided against yet another injunction, meaning he is not now eligible to return until the Cowboys' December 24 clash with the Seattle Seahawks.

The NFL handed down Elliott's suspension August 11 after a yearlong investigation into accusations of domestic violence in Ohio.

Elliott's base salary for the 2017 season is $1,584,379.

An NFL Players Association source told ESPN.com that Elliott will not play "while we argue".

The Elliott suspension has been weaving through the courts since he was ordered in August to serve the ban for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. That wasn't the case early last week when the 22-year-old was suspended until Friday after a judge rejected his request for a second injunction.

Elliott, a Pro Bowler as a rookie last season, ranks second in the National Football League with 783 rushing yards.
