  • Martellus Bennett claimed by New England Patriots on waivers

Bennett, who signed a three-year, $21-million contract in the offseason, rejoins the club he won a Super Bowl with last season. A powerful line-of-scrimmage blocker with five consecutive seasons of 50-plus receptions, Bennett provided fresh options to a potent offense.

The 30-year-old then sat out practice Wednesday and was listed as having a shoulder injury as Green Bay began preparations for its game Sunday at Chicago. Bennett appears ready to tough it out and play for the Patriots.

Bennett, the team's big offseason free-agent acquisition, gave the Packers one of the deepest tight end groups in the National Football League with Richard Rodgers and Lance Kendricks. In 16 games for the Patriots past year, Bennett had 55 receptions for 701 yards and seven touchdowns.

With Green Bay, he hauled in 24 catches for 233 yards and no touchdowns.

Former Packers' TE Martellus Bennett claimed on waivers by the New England Patriots, per source.

Said tight end Richard Rodgers: "I think we know where we're trying to go". Third-string tight end Jacob Hollister has just three catches for 37 yards.

Adding to the confusion, during the Packers' bye week, Bennett posted on social media that he was "pretty sure" he would retire after the season. And because he's considering retiring after the season, he may not suit up for another game in the NFL. "You adjust the way you do things, the way you game plan and the way you move forward". Everything leading up to that, I can't really comment on it.

Last season, Bennett hauled in 55 catches for 701 yards and a career-high seven touchdowns.
