Sen. Amy Klobuchar, like Franken a Democrat, also criticized his behavior and called for an investigation.

Al Franken, D-Minn., offered his "sincerest apologies" to a woman who accused him of kissing and groping her without permission in 2006, and called for an ethics investigation into his actions.

"He said to me, "We need to rehearse the kiss" she wrote in the blog.

Franken first issued an apology to Tweeden, in which he said that the photo "was clearly meant to be amusing but wasn't".

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said the accusations made by KABC anchor and former model Leeann Tweeden are "troubling" and he hopes and expects that the Senate Ethics Committee will fully investigate.

Tweeden said Thursday that Franken was persistent, and "every time I see him now, my hands clench into fists".

Tweeden said she assumed she could turn her head away or put her hand over Franken's mouth "to get more laughs from the crowd". It is not clear from the photo whether Franken touched her, but Tweeden said he had.

She said Franken, in his previous life as a comedian, wrote a skit that featured a moment when his character kisses her, and he wanted to rehearse the kiss, which she didn't want to do.

Tweeden said Franken continued to insist, causing her to grow uncomfortable. When she arrived home Tweeden was given a CD of photos taken on the trip.

"To this day I talk about it and my hand clenches into a fist", Tweeden said.

Of the photo, Franken said: "I look at it now, and I feel disgusted with myself".

"I felt violated all over again. Comedy is no excuse for inappropriate conduct, and I believe there should be an ethics investigation", McCaskill wrote on Twitter.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, said the issue should be referred to the ethics committee. "I don't know what was in my head when I took that picture, and it doesn't matter". But "I've decided it's time to tell my story".

While riffing on ideas involving Rooney finding an empty bottle of sedatives in his desk, Franken suggested Rooney say he had used the drugs to sedate and rape fellow "60 Minutes" correspondent Lesley Stahl.

"People make mistakes", she replied. "It isn't amusing. It's completely inappropriate", he said. She also said that she believes he pushed to kiss her during a rehearsal the show because they were alone. Franken also called for an ethics investigation.

Last month, Franken addressed the slew of sexual misconduct allegations that have been against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein - a representative has repeatedly denied allegations of non-consensual sex - saying in a Facebook post that the women who spoke up "are incredibly fearless".

"He walked up to me, found me in a room, and said hello to me and I was very cold to him", she said. Harassment and assault, he says, are completely unacceptable in the workplace or anywhere else.
