Dimitrov needed just 22 minutes to clinch the first set having raced into a 5-0 lead, wrapping it up as Carreno Busta dumped a return into the net.

The second game of the second set was to prove a turning point as Goffin, beaten 6-2 6-1 by Federer in Basel last month, broke the Swiss's serve with a forehand victor and then consolidated his lead to take the match into a decider.

The 26-year-old Goffin, who earlier this year became the first Belgian player to reach the ATP top 10, looked stunned as he secured one of the greatest wins of his career.

David Goffin had pledged to find a way against the mighty Roger Federer in the Nitto ATP Finals.

But then he ran into Grigor Dimitrov, who remains undefeated in the final ATP tourney of the year.

Dimitrov battled to a 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory against Goffin at the O2 Arena in London, while Scherzinger ran the rule over wannabe pop stars on United Kingdom talent show The X Factor.

"I just can't believe it", Goffin said after the match with disbelief writ large on his face.

It was 4-3 Dimitrov when he decisively broke serve to put himself on the brink of the final.

"It was the only game I didn't serve well".

After being totally humbled in the first set, Goffin earned the confidence-boosting start to the second set after gaining a solid service hold.

Both players struggled to hold serve in the early stages of the contest, with Goffin appearing to settle quickest as he twice broke his opponent in the first three games.

He'd had to change things up after taking only two games off Dimitrov in their round-robin encounter last Wednesday, but his fearless all-or-nothing approach wasn't enough as a late resurgence on his own serve and his encouragement for the crowd failed to save the match.

"I think in the beginning, I think I started the match exactly the way I wanted it". The mistakes were starting to creep in as Sock pushed Dimitrov hard on the attack; forcing him wide off the court and then forcing a sprint with a slice drop shot.

As the tension mounted, Goffin saved three match points on his own serve but Dimitrov held his nerve to seal the match on his fifth opportunity. "But I will try something different for sure, yeah".
