  • High school students forced to make iPhones working 11-hour days at Chinese factory

Apple supplier Foxconn is in hot water over allegations it uses student workers illegally to manufacture parts for the new iPhone X.

High school students who should be bringing apples for their teachers are instead being forced to make iPhones and working overtime at one of Apple's major factories, according to a report.

Six high-schoolers told FT that they are regularly working 11-hour days at a factory in Zhengzhou, China, constructing the iPhone X. The time parameters exceed China's legally mandated amount student interns are permitted to work. The students were reportedly told that their three-month time at the facility was required "work experience" that was needed for them to graduate.

"We are being forced by our school to work here", said Ms. Yang, an 18-year-old student who requested that her real name be withheld for fear of punishment.

During the course of a recent audit, we discovered instances of student interns working overtime at a supplier facility in China.

"This work has nothing to do with our studies".

This isn't the first time that Foxconn has come under fire for less-than-ideal working conditions.

While certainly damning, the report also highlights the need for Apple and its partners to implement additional measures to protect their workers.

"All work was voluntary and compensated appropriately", a factory spokesperson said.

This is illegal for student interns under Chinese law. She added that she is made to assemble up to 1,200 iPhone X cameras each day. The school declined to comment when contacted by the Financial Times.

According to early rumors, it's possible that Samsung is working on FaceID-like features for it's next iteration of the Galaxy smartphone as it looks to better position itself against Apple's iPhone X. However, early rumors on the device point to plenty of software upgrades for the S9 with limited improvements in the actual hardware. During this period, staff numbers at the Zhengzhou factory can triple from 100,000 to more than 300,000, the employee reportedly told The Financial Times.

Compared to past infractions, the overtime issue might seem relatively minor, but Apple and Foxconn are under intense scrutiny due to prior problems.
