Spirit drinking linked to aggressive emotion

23 November, 2017, 00:11 | Author: Elaine Woods
  • Research involving 30,000 people has found drinkers have significantly different emotional responses to different alcoholic drinks

Thus, it was concluded that different types of alcohol have the same effect on people, regardless of their cultural level, social group and country of residence.

Breaking down the results further, the research team found that men were more likely to report feeling aggressive when drinking in general compared to women.

The study drew on data gathered by the Global Drug Survey, an independent research organisation, which runs annual self-funded surveys.

For beer drinkers, half of the people asked reported feeling relaxed, while the least common emotion was aggression - just 7% of people said they felt aggressive after drinking. For example, the total impact is expressed in excessive cheerfulness and activity, but, more specifically, the whiskey man is just hot - basically, it means harsh words, vivid gestures, etc., while drinking tequila, he is looking for "adventures", his lure with danger, Jin is a feeling of sadness.

Drinking red wine may elicit conflicting responses of feeling both sexy and exhausted, a new study suggests.

"For centuries the history of rum, gin, vodka and other spirits has been laced with violence", says study co-author Mark Bellis, from the Centre for Public Health at Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.

In fact, drinking spirits tends to draw out more negative feelings than other types of alcohol, say the United Kingdom authors. About 59% of respondents associated these drinks with feelings of energy and confidence, and more than 40% associated them with feeling sexy.

The study led by experts at Bangor University and King's College London found red wine was likely to make people feel sexy and relaxed- but also tired and tearful
Wine officially makes people feel sexier than beer – but only until they get tired

Almost a third (30 per cent) of spirit drinkers associated this tipple with feelings of aggression compared with around 2.5 per cent of red wine drinkers. And beer followed closely behind in second place. Some respondents said even the complete absence of any new emotions after consuming this drink. The emotions noted in the study include feeling energised, relaxed, sexy, confident, tired, aggressive, ill, restless, and tearful. Be it an alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink, it does have a specific impact on you. Beer was also associated with feeling relaxed and confident, although it was also associated with high levels of feeling exhausted.

The study is published as the Scottish government announced it will introduce minimum pricing for alcohol on 1 May next year in a bid to combat binge drinking.

'Understanding emotions associated with alcohol consumption is imperative to addressing alcohol misuse, providing insight into what emotions influence drink choice between different groups in the population, ' the study says.

The responses also differed by gender and degree of alcohol dependency. This can result in a quicker stimulating effect as blood alcohol levels increase.

Bellis: There is plenty of promotional material that pushes the positive emotions people might look for from drinking, but it is important to understand the negative ones as well.

The findings showed that men were significantly more likely to associate feelings of aggression with all types of alcohol, as were those categorised as heavy/dependent drinkers, who were six times more likely to do so than low risk drinkers.
