American Airlines Addresses Scheduling Nightmare

  • American Airlines says holiday 'scheduling error' is being resolved

However, the latest word from the airline is that these issues have been addressed.

The Christmas season is already a chaotic time for many people, but a computer glitch could make things even more hard for American Airlines and anyone scheduled to fly with them next month.

If you're flying American Airlines over the holidays, you can breathe a sigh of relief.

According to the Allied Pilots Association (APA), the glitch had left more than 15,000 flights without a captain, co-pilot or both between December 17 and December 31 at dozens of airports.

American Airlines announced Friday that it had reached an agreement with its pilots union to avoid the cancellation of thousands of flights this holiday season that were left without cockpit crews due to a scheduling error. Affected by the glitch were flights originating in Philadelphia, Dallas-Fort Worth, Boston, Miami, New York, Salt Lake City, and Charlotte, N.C., according to a company memo to the union reported by Bloomberg News on Wednesday.

Egypt Hunts For Killers After Mosque Attack Leaves At Least 235 Dead
According to the local police, gunmen arrived in four off-road vehicles and bombed the mosque. The attackers also opened fire upon the people as they tried exiting the mosque.

By Thursday, only a few hundred flights remained unstaffed, American said. "That number of open flights continues to decrease, thanks to our pilots who are stepping up to the plate and picking up trips", American said. The APA, meanwhile, advised pilots not to sign on, saying that the airline's solution violated the union contract. We are pleased to report that together, American and the Allied Pilots Association have put that worry to rest to make sure our flights will operate as scheduled.

Both APA and American declined to detail the exact nature of the agreement, but the deal comes at a time when airlines' rising labor costs are in the spotlight.

"With this agreement in principle, we anticipate that American Airlines will be able to maintain a full December schedule as planned for its passengers", the union said. Still, stressed fliers took to social media, asking the airline if they'd be able to make it home during the busy holiday season.

"We have not canceled any scheduled flights in December and will continue to work to ensure both our pilots and our customers are cared for", the airline said.
