Laid up with 'man flu'? It's real, researcher claims

  • Man Flu Might Be Real After All, Claims Academic

For starters, his study didn't take into consideration other differences between sexes, like the fact that men smoke at higher rates than women (a possibly major contribution to how their bodies processes colds and flus) and are less likely to take preventive care of themselves or seek medical attention when ill.

A new research has shown that men get worse flu symptoms than women so if a man complains of cold or flu symptoms dismissing his laments will not be fair.

However other healthcare professionals have said that the flu isn't "sexist" and that "man flu" isn't an actual disease caused by the influenza virus Are influenza symptoms really worse for men?

There is also some evidence that supports the conclusion that men suffer more from viral respiratory illness than women and it is being attributed to a weaker immune system in men.

Though Sue says the evolutionary benefits of the man flu are unclear, he points to other research that says it may be part of a survival technique since "it promotes energy conservation and reduces the risk of encountering predators".

In the journal, he points out that no scientific review has examined whether the term man flu "is appropriately defined or just an ingrained pejorative term with no scientific basis".

Dr. Sue found studies involving mice show testosterone might dampen a man's immune response to the flu. The report is written somewhat tongue-in-cheek by Doctor Kyle Sue.

Sue stated, "Men are regularly stereotyped to exaggerate cold and flu symptoms".

After years of enduring the dual injustices of suffering through a bout of influenza while having the females in his life cast doubt on the severity of his illness, man may now retreat to the sofa at the first sign of a sneeze, in the knowledge that at least science believes them. Sue asked. "I was surprised that there were far more female authors for the studies I cited than males".

"Men are regularly stereotyped to exaggerate cold and flu symptoms", Sue noted.

One of the sketches that helped to make the term "man flu" widely used was a scene from Man Stroke Woman.

And Sue added that if the underpinnings of "man flu" are real, it could mean that flu treatment may have to be tailored to address gender differences. During the reproductive years, it is women who often suffer more severe disease, in part because flu is worse for pregnant women but also because women develop higher - nearly excessive - inflammatory responses to flu.

Dr. Ebbing Lautenbach, chief of the division of infectious diseases at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine, said the latest analysis "does a nice job of reviewing how much real data there are to back up these commonly held impressions".
