Four people suffered non-life-threatening injuries after an explosion rocked New York's busy Port Authority bus terminal on Monday morning.

A pipe bomb exploded below the Port Authority near 42nd street between 8th and 9th ave. The blast went off at the Port Authority Bus Terminal at 7.20am Monday, just a block from Times Square, forcing commuters to escape from what authorities concluded was an act of terror.

According to the police, three subway lines - the A, C and E - were evacuated. He was carrying a homemade explosive device, officials said.

The weapon was based on a pipe bomb and attached to the suspect, police said.

Commuters can be seen covering their heads and running from the scene, as the passage fills with smoke.

The NYPD also informed that it has taken one male suspect into the custody and is responding to the explosion at the 42nd Avenue in the city.

Francisco Ramirez said he was exiting a bus when he heard two blasts, even though he was wearing headphones.

"Today's attempted mass murder attack in New York City - the second terror attack in New York in the last two months - once again highlights the urgent need for Congress to enact legislative reforms to protect the American people", Trump said in a statement.

It's led to delays along some of the subway lines that pass beneath the bus terminal.

Ullah apparently traveled overseas to Bangladesh in September and returned in October, a law enforcement source tells CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton.

Police activity has temporarily closed the terminal and is affecting NJ Transit buses.

At the White House, spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters, "This attack underscores the need for Congress to work with the president on immigration reforms that enhance our national security and public safety".

It was the deadliest terror attack in New York City since the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center.

The suspect, Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, was indicted last month on murder and terror-related charges, the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY said.
