Vivo smartphones will be first to feature in-display fingerprint sensor

  • Vivo not Samsung will have the first phone with in-screen fingerprint scanner

Considering the imminent release of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the tech giant's partnership with Synaptics before, Samsung seems to be the prime candidate to receive them under the display fingerprint sensor.

While Vivo might not be the first name people think of when it comes to top 5 phone manufacturers, IDC reports that it was behind only Samsung, Apple, Huawei, and OPPO in Q1 2017. Vivo also made headlines back in June when it demonstrated an in-display fingerprint scanner from Qualcomm. The sensor is reportedly "fast and simple" and it's meant to save your phone's battery life by staying inactive when not needed.

Moorhead further stated that in-display fingerprint sensors on smartphones weren't available so far due to manufacturing issues.

According to Synaptics it's also apparently faster and cheaper than Face ID, so you might not have to spend a small fortune to get a phone with an in-screen scanner. Well, we don't have to wait for next month's CES to find out who that top 5 OEM is, as we now know it is Vivo that will showcase the under-display technology, with Forbes going hands-on with a pre-production unit with Clear ID onboard. The latter technologies are still big advancements in the mobile space, but the Holy Grail has been an invisible fingerprint sensor within your screen.

The technology, named Clear ID works like this: There will be an illuminated fingerprint image below the display on the screen and by touching this, the phone can be unlocked.

The analyst says that the experience "was faster than I expected".

Australia rip through England to claim 2-0 lead
In the surgical assault that led England to that point, Australia's bowlers did them a favour by bowling so well. England could surrender the Ashes next week at the WACA ground in Perth, where it has not won a Test since 1978.

With the inbuilt sensors the manufacturers in near future would be able to bring out more full-screen smartphones, complete with the ease of a front-facing fingerprint sensor.

Apple recently abandoned its fingerprint scanner in favour of Face ID, partly because the new iPhone X has no space for a home button.

This is a critical detail, as companies such as OnePlus that have tried to emulate Apple's facial recognition tech without advanced depth-sensing cameras have had to compromise security in favor of convenience.

Overall, it looks like the Synaptics Clear ID technology is very reliable based on Moorhead's experience.

Vivo isn't particularly well-known in Western markets, but is popular in India as the fourth-biggest smartphone maker and holds a similar position in China.
