  • Utah Paper Urges Hatch to Retire, Citing 'Lack of Integrity' and 'Unquenchable Thirst for Power'

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on Monday tweeted out an editorial in The Salt Lake Tribune naming him "Utahn of the Year", declaring that he was "grateful for this Christmas honor".

The paper's editorial called Hatch the "Utahn of the Year", while stressing that the designation was not a compliment, and instead a reflection of his influence within the state and Washington, D.C. Still, Hatch's twitter account thanked the paper for the label.

The Salt Lake Tribune named Hatch their "Utahn of the Year", an honor the paper said is given to an impactful Utahn, whether their contributions were "for good or for ill".

The scathing editorial not only called for Mr. Hatch to step down - or for voters to oust him in 2018 - but also stated that he had an "utter lack of integrity that rises from his unquenchable thirst for power".

"It would be good for Utah if Hatch, having finally caught the Great White Whale of tax reform, were to call it a career", the editorial board wrote.

"When President Obama designated the Bears Ears monument in December, he did so ignoring the voices of Utah leaders who were united in opposition, and even more importantly, ignoring the voices of the local Utahns most affected by this massive land grab", Hatch said in April, according to Desert News.

The 83-year-old has been serving in the Senate since 1977, however, and much of his constituency would like to see him retire at the end of this term, 78 percent according to one recent poll. "A favor done in return for Hatch's support of the president generally and of his tax reform plan in particular".

Hatch, who is the Senate's longest-serving member with 42 years of service, has always been one of the staunchest conservatives in the chamber.

Hatch's official Twitter account shared a photograph of the Salt Lake Tribune's Christmas day front page, which was covered with a portrait of Hatch.

"Clearly, it was a lie", the newspaper stated. By not giving other potential candidates a chance to mount a credible challenge, Hatch's backtrack on his promise not to run again "is basically a theft from the Utah electorate", the newspaper said.

Five years later, Hatch sat on the Senate Judiciary Committee that held hearings on Clarence Thomas's nomination to the Supreme Court. That's not only not fair to all of those who were passed over.
