  • Kabul blast: US condemns attack, vows to 'work closely' with Afghanistan to hunt down terrorists

Afghan Journalists Safety Committee recently reported a surge in attacks against journalists, with at least 73 cases recorded in 2017, an increase of 35 percent compared with 2016.

President Ashraf Ghani on Thursday vehemently denounced a deadly attack on a Shiite cultural centre in Kabul.

"A ceremony was being held to mark the 38th anniversary of Soviet invasion in Afghanistan when the explosion went off".

The statement was made after a double suicide attack hit Kabul earlier in the day, claiming the lives of 41 people and injuring 84 more: one took place near the Sada-i-Afghan (Afghan Voice) news agency and the other reportedly hit a cultural center.

The attack has not yet been claimed by any insurgent group.

Government Wants More And More User Data From Facebook
The social media company also took down 217,265 posts from Facebook driven by counterfeit claims, and 108,094 from Instagram. Compared to the first half of 2016, where the number of requests stood at 6,324, this is almost a 55 per cent jump for 2017.

Afghanistan is among the world's most unsafe countries for media workers, with two journalists and five media assistants killed doing their jobs this year, before today's attack.

According to one survivor, social activists had gathered at the Tebyan social and cultural activity center for a meeting when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives.

Meanwhile, the apparent attack on a media organization also prompted outrage in many like Mujib Khilwatgar, CEO of the Nai, a media advocacy group, who told Pajhwok New that the Afghan Voice news agency was the target of the attack. He called them attacks against Islam and "all human values".

Rahimi said the main blast was followed by two smaller bomb explosions that did not cause casualties. Women and children were among the dead at the center, which accounted for the vast majority of the casualties.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack but the local Islamic State affiliate has carried out several attacks targeting Shiites in Afghanistan. Security in the city has been ramped up since May 31 when a massive truck bomb ripped through the diplomatic quarter, killing some 150 people and wounding around 400 others - mostly civilians.
