  • Former Soccer Star Weah Wins Liberian Presidential Runoff

Celebrations have begun in Liberia as former FIFA World Player of the Year George Weah is set to be declared the victor of the West African nation's presidential election.

"Pursuant to the authority vested in the Commission by the Constitution and the new election law of the Republic of Liberia, and based on the results just read, I, acting on behalf of the board of commissioners, do hereby declare the presidential ticket of senator George Weah and Jewel Howard-Taylor as the victor from the December 26, 2017 presidential run-off election", board president Jerome Korkoya said.

Born in a slum in Monrovia, Weah went on to play for top European football clubs Paris St-Germain and AC Milan, before ending his career in England with brief stays at Chelsea and Manchester City.

Africa's first female president, Nobel Peace Prize victor Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, is stepping aside after two terms at the head of the nation founded by freed American slaves.

"On behalf of the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday congratulates Mr George Weah on his election as the next President of the Republic of Liberia".

His popularity at home fuelled a previous run for president in 2005, and he won the first round but lost the second round to Ms Johnson Sirleaf, who he will now succeed. "People are talking about Weah, but it's only in his counties but not mine", he said. "Although we worked so assiduously for a different outcome than what the results show, my faith, values, and principles dictate that l respect the will of our people as announced by the National Elections Commission", he noted.

Sirleaf's office said it had set up a team "for the proper management and orderly transfer of executive power from one democratically elected president to another", adding that it included several ministers. She led the country from back-to-back civil wars and saw it through a deadly Ebola outbreak.

Sirleaf's predecessor Charles Taylor fled the country in 2003, hoping to avoid prosecution for funding rebel groups in neighbouring Sierra Leone.

Two presidents who served prior to Taylor were assassinated.

The United Nations and the Economic Community of West African States hailed the peaceful polls.

The election passed without a single major incident of violence despite weeks of delays caused by legal challenges and Liberians said they were looking forward to a peaceful handover after 12 years under Sirleaf.
