  • Walmart offers free opioid disposal product in effort to fight painkiller abuse epidemic

DisposeRx should occur with new painkiller prescriptions filled at Walmart and Sam's Club 4,700 pharmacies around the country.

Customers filling a new class II opioid prescription at any of Wal-Mart's 4,700 USA pharmacies will now receive a packet of DisposeRx, a powder that - when mixed into a pill bottle with warm water - creates a safe, biodegradable gel, the company said in a statement on Wednesday. When mixed with warm water, the powder then transforms the pills into a biodegradable gel to be safely thrown in the trash, rendering them useless.

Walmart pharmacies will provide Dispose-RX at no cost to patients filling new class-two opioid prescriptions. Walmart will also offer free DisposeRx packets to existing patients.

The product, a powder called DisposeRX, is meant to be used by customers who no longer need their prescription painkillers or are concerned that someone else might take their pills.

Walmart customers can request a free packet anytime, and people with long-term prescriptions will get one every six months.

Misuse of prescription opioids is a contributing factor to the opioid crisis in the United States, with more than 50% of people who abuse prescription opioids obtaining them through friends and family. Ongoing counseling will also be made available to Walmart patients on proper opioid use and how to use DisposeRx.

"The healthy and safety of our patients is a critical priority", said Marybeth Hays, executive vice president of Consumable and Health and Wellness at Walmart. "Too often, these risky narcotics remain unsecured where children, teens or visitors may have access", which really drives home the necessity for this newly-established program.

Safe disposal of prescription opioids is a necessary component to preventing overdoses.

The unique DisposeRx packets contain a crosslinking polymer blend. "I commend Walmart for taking this innovative approach to help keep unused prescription drugs out of the wrong hands".

The DisposeRx launch comes in addition to Walmart's other efforts to curb opioid misuse.
