The National Tsunami Warning Center, part of the National Weather Service, tells that they issued a routine tsunami test message at approximately this morning.

While the National Weather Service did send out a tsunami warning to an unconfirmed number of people around 8:30 am today, it may not have been immediately obvious to some that it was marked as a test. People in NY also reportedly received the warning, as did people in Maine.

"Looking out the window and seeing the ocean puts you in a different frame of mind when you get a tsunami warning", he said.

A Tsunami warning is NOT in effect for Charleston according to officials with the National Weather Service.

U.S. officials were investigating how incorrect alerts were broadcast to cellphones on Tuesday warning residents of coastal cities from NY to New Orleans of possible tsunami waves.

"AccuWeather was correct in reading the mistaken NWS codes embedded in the warning".

Frank Nocera, a meteorologists with the National Weather Service Boston office, said that the message originated from the Tsunami Warning Center in Alaska, and the National Weather Service offices across the country just rebroadcast that message.

Frank said he would refer people to for further information, and right now there is no threat for a tsunami anywhere on the coast.

But the message came a bit too late for many people who saw the alert and took to social media in a panicked flurry.

Those with the Accuweather app reported that a Tsunami Warning alert appeared on their phones. "We do tsunami alert testing every month, and it was the same message that went out every month". The agency's chief resigned and the worker who sent the alert was sacked.

The incident comes just weeks after Hawaii emergency management officials mistakenly sent a false alert to mobile devices and televisions warning of an incoming ballistic missile.
