The decision by the ANC's National Executive Committee, its top decision-making body, to postpone its meeting until later this month came after "constructive" talks between Mr Zuma and Ddeputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, party spokesman Pule Mabe said late on Tuesday.

Asked about the ongoing talks surrounding Mr Zuma, ANC spokeswoman Khusela Diko said: "There is no crisis within the ANC, we are used to robust discussions". Zuma has survived nine votes of no-confidence, but his party has increasingly split over his unpopularity, and another no-confidence motion is scheduled for February 22.

There have been reports that Zuma - who faces hundreds of allegations of corruption from his two terms in office and possible jail time - is digging in his heels and refusing to step down.

Cyril Ramaphosa released a statement clarifying the reasons for postponing the NEC meeting, which was due to take place on Wednesday.

She said they wanted a favorable environment for the address to be delivered because in the past four years Zuma's addresses have been interrupted by the opposition.

Zuma met Cabinet ministers on Tuesday and, a day earlier, visited Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini in his home base of KwaZulu-Natal province, which has been a strong base of support for the president.

"I doubt that he will go quietly because his presidency has been troublesome - he has essentially used it to protect himself and evade accountability", Ndletyana told AFP.

Since Mr Ramaphosa beat Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Mr Zuma's favoured successor and ex-wife, in the December vote for the party leadership, the president's fortunes have waned. The Democratic Alliance, a prominent opposition party, called for the address to be postponed. Cracks began to show in the top six leadership as secretary general Ace Magashule, a staunch Zuma supporter, said over the weekend that Zuma will deliver the Sona.

Mr Zuma is facing multiple charges of corruption. We need to know what agreements are being made for Zuma's exit. We want to save taxpayers' money. "They say he must go, so why should he speak?" he asked.

"We warned ANC about Zuma. He is leaving, and that is inevitable".

"This is the beginning of the end for Zuma", said Theo Venter, a political analyst at North-West University's business school in Potchefstroom, west of Johannesburg.

"Zuma is not scared of impeachment", Malema said. Only the NEC can vote to "recall" a leader deployed to serve in government.

But Zuma loyalists have said that the serving president should complete his second and final term in office, which would end when elections are held next year.

The group of men, who had filled the vehicle, were seen running away in different directions, some even leaving their shoes behind. The ANC supporters described the actions of BLF members as unacceptable and undermining authority. Communications manager Khusela Diko told reporters the ANC was enthusiastic to resolve the impasse, as it was creating unnecessary anxiety in the country.
