  • Trump's First CPAC Speech Set The Tone For His Rise In Politics

As he addresses the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, Friday morning, he will have an opportunity to take a victory lap for his first year and charge up activists ahead of this year's election that will determine if Republicans will retain control of Congress.

Trump also got applause from the crowd for strengthening background checks, though he didn't mention another proposal he has hinted he would support: raising the age of purchase for some guns such as semi-automatic weapons from 18 to 21.

"You had one guard, he did not turn out to be really good, I will tell you that", Trump said.

His comments were almost identical to what National Rifle Association leaders proposed during the three-day annual CPAC conference on Thursday, hammering home that the fight to protect the Second Amendment could be in danger if Democrats are successful in the 2018 elections this fall.

Trump then shouted each option and allowed the audience to cheer, gauging the crowd's opinion on the matter.

Trump, warning of a wave of Democrats winning midterm elections, polled the audience on whether they prefer the Second Amendment or the GOP tax overhauls he signed into law late previous year.

"I know that whoever wins the presidency has a disadvantage, for whatever reason, in the midterms", Trump said, waving his arms. "Because I had five people outside say, 'Could you do The Snake?'". Trump expressed hope Republicans "clobber" Democrats "because everybody gets off their 'a**', and they work". Hey, we are hanging in, we are hanging in, we are hanging in there.

At the beginning of his speech, Trump tossed aside his prepared remarks, telling the audience that the original speech was "wonderful, but a little boring".

-He lead crowd in chants of "Lock her up!" against Hillary Clinton. Echoing Pence's call that the administration's first year was the "most consequential" since at least President Ronald Reagan's, Phillips said, "That's a great point that I hope our base hears".

That formerly libertarian-leaning conference's transformation toward a full embrace of Trump began a year ago, as members of Trump's team took the stage, comparing him to the movement's idol, former President Ronald Reagan. Trump reiterated his campaign pledge to build a wall along the U.S. "You know what? We can't let that happen.

Keep it going", Trump said.

In a rollicking 75-minute address to the premier annual gathering of grassroots conservatives, Trump smashed his enemies, joked about his hair, defended his controversial new gun proposals, and warned conservatives against electoral complacency.

Some conservatives expressed dismay at CPAC's embrace of Trump.

He said that "gun adept members of staff within the school" could make up between 20-30% of the faculty, but offered no concrete evidence that could prove this.

The hallways were filled with well-dressed attendees adorned with Trump campaign hats and buttons.

Trump said Democrats, who he called "crazed", are no longer interested in talking about the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals immigration program. "I don't want to get into that battle".
