Gov. Cuomo and the Democratic governors of Connecticut, New Jersey and Rhode Island announced the creation Thursday of the "States for Gun Safety" coalition to share resources and intelligence to curb gun trafficking and prevent risky individuals from purchasing guns.

The agreement further calls on the states to step up efforts to share information with one another and develop a coordinated plan to use their law enforcement resources to respond to threats of mass gun violence.

The task force will race and intercept illegal guns, step up intelligence and information sharing among the states and create a regional gun violence research group.

Four Democratic Governors say they're not waiting for President Trump or Congress to come up with a solution for gun violence.

That group will conduct studies to better inform policy makers. Kids in Florida and across the nation are taking action, and it's not a surprise: "We've forced them to lead because for years elected officials in Washington have refused to", Governor Raimondo said.

Information on gun purchases, permits, and which guns have been used in crimes will now be able to be shared across four states.

Candles glow at a memorial site to honor the 17 people who were killed in the February 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. He noted the US outlawed machine guns in the 1930s, but said it has gone backward since by allowing the sale of military-style weapons, such as the AR-15. All of our states are already ahead of the federal government when it comes to laws on this issue. "The probability is they also go across the borders to make gun purchases and why not share that information?"

Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo said it's still legal in her state to buy a military-style weapon, carry concealed firearms into schools and state buildings, and purchase high-capacity magazines - something she hopes to work with state lawmakers to change. People may be disqualified from owning a firearm for several reasons, including an arrest warrant, order of protection, debilitating mental health condition, or criminal history. Having said that, there's no substitute for that... we need them to take action.

The system also puts member states in a better position to determine "the fitness and suitability of a gun applicant or owner" to prevent high-risk individuals from obtaining weapons in the first place, according to the memorandum signed today.

The quartet of governors also announced the possibility that public universities could become centers for research into gun violence.
