A thriving "hotspot" of 1.5 million Adelie penguins, a species fast declining in parts of the world, has been discovered on remote islands off the Antarctic Peninsula.

'Not only do The Danger Islands hold the largest population of Adélie penguins on the Antarctic Peninsula, they also appear to have not suffered the population declines found along the western side of Antarctic Peninsula that are associated with recent climate change, ' he said.

The scientists used an algorithm to search images from the American Landsat spacecraft for sites of possible penguin activity.

With the discovery of all these new penguins, there comes an opportunity to learn more about their colony, and the way they differ from others of the same species who live elsewhere on the Antarctic peninsula.

"We were surprised to find so many penguins on these islands, especially because some of these islands were not known to have penguins".

"It is certainly surprising and it has real consequences for how we manage this region", study co-author Heather Lynch of Stony Brook University told AFP. It's locked up in sea ice most of the year, and even in summer it's hard to reach.

The team conducted the first ever comprehensive census of the flightless birds using aerial drones, satellite photos, ship-borne photo surveillance and on-the-ground nest counting during a survey trip aboard the M/V Hans Hansson from December 9-18, 2015.

Toronto man faces murder charges in six men's deaths
December 8, 2017 - Police Chief Mark Saunders says the force will review its practices in missing persons investigations. The Toronto man was a subject of Project Prism, and police have said he had a sexual relationship with McArthur.

Then followed a field expedition for a census using a combination of drone footage, pictures taken on the ground, and an old fashioned walk-about headcount. The team wasn't sure how many penguins were there, so they set out to count them.

Considering the importance of the colony, there is now a proposal under consideration to name the Danger Islands a Marine Protected Area (MPA) that will allow the penguins to thrive without too much outside interference from humans-besides, of course, the occasional visits from anthropologists who are studying the birds' behavior and habitat.

"This is called the Danger Islands for a reason", said Ms Lynch.

What's insane is that before this, no one really thought the remote rocky chain of islands off the Antarctic Peninsula's northwestern tip was home to penguins - let alone 1.5 million of them.

"It's not clear what the driver of those declines is yet; the candidates are climate change, fishing and direct human disturbance, but it does show the size of the problem".

"Whether they'll be in or out, we don't know but at least now the people making those decisions will understand how important this area is", she told BBC News. It's also the middle of the breeding season for penguins, which helped in counting them. "I am sure that there are many other natural discoveries to be made using these "eyes in the sky".
