"The Shape of Water", a drama film directed by Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, has won the Oscar for best picture at the 90th Academy Awards on Sunday. With a leading 13 nominations, the film took home the night's top prizes, also winning Best Picture, Best Director and Production Design.

Guillermo del Toro won the best director Oscar for The Shape of Water, his sumptuous, sensual fairytale that is a Technicolor ode to outsiders.

The movie about a mute cleaning woman who falls in love with a odd river creature - a fable about the mistreatment of the powerless - had gone into the ceremony with a leading 13 nominations, and won a total of four Academy Awards.

He thanked America "for the many wonderful gifts it has given me - my home, my livelihood, my family and now Oscar". Thank you for this.

McDormand gave an energetic speech as she collected her prize, in which she encouraged all the female nominees from the night to stand up with her.

"We all have stories to tell and projects we need financed", she said to enthusiastic applause.

The Time's Up and Me Too movements, prompted by the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment scandal, were given the spotlight during a moving segment of the ceremony, while Salma Hayek, Ashley Judd and Annabella Sciorra, who are all Weinstein accusers, appeared on stage together.

After last year's embarrassing best picture envelope mix-up that saw La La Land being declared victor instead of Moonlight, there were no issues with the show this time.

Organizers were looking to rebound after last year's flubbed announcement by Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway of the best picture victor, the trophy was initially given to "La La Land", when the actual victor was "Moonlight".

As they say, presenting is lovelier the second time around, Dunaway joked.
