  • JRL calls shutdown tomorrow against civilian killings in Shopian

According to Brigadier Harbir Singh and Colonel N.S. Negi, two speeding vehicles were asked to stop near Shopian's Pohanu village around 8 p.m. on Sunday by the Army's mobile vehicle checkpost. The youths were Suhail Ahmad Wagay, 22, Shahid Khan, 21, Shahnawaz Wagay, 23, and Gowhar Ahmad Lone. While two bodies - one youth and one militant - were found near the site of shooting on Monday morning, four bodies - comprising three youths and a militant - were found on Sunday night itself.

The victims comprised three over ground workers (OGW) and the militant, it claimed. Army retaliated killing a militant and three others, the official said. "When police was called in, they found a auto some distance away in which another boy was found dead", he said.

Local residents alleged that this was the second time in this year that civilians have been killed in Army firing, and hinted that the incident could spark unrest.

The killings led to massive clashes between protesters and the occupational forces in Shopian, Pulwama, and other areas, reported KMS.

But thousands of demonstrators still clashed with police and troops across the territory, one police officer told AFP.

The various business communities of the valley also reacted to the killings.
