  • Net Neutrality law passes in the State of Oregon

Washington state has a new law to protect net neutrality at a time when the feds are getting rid of it.

Washington has become the first state to enact its own net-neutrality requirements after USA regulators repealed Obama-era rules created to keep the internet an even playing field.

Washington government approved first net-neutrality regulation on Monday, when regulators from the United States revoked the regulations governed during the era of Obama administration, which banned internet service providers from impeding blocking the online traffic content.

He said that because the internet is an interstate service, only Congress can pass legislation "that gives all consumers and internet services providers the clarity and consistency needed for a free and open internet". "It allows a student in Washington to connect to researchers all around the world, or a small business to compete with large businesses in the global marketplace".

It also requires ISP's to publicly disclose "accurate information regarding the network management practices, performance characteristics and commercial terms of its broadband internet access services".

Thanks to Manka Dhingra's victory, net neutrality got a vote in both chambers this session and is now on our books as part of the Revised Code of Washington. That's fine. But we know it's a joke.

Backstory: Late past year, the Federal Communications Commission voted to reverse Obama-era rules that sought to democratize the Internet. This has resulted in numerous lawsuits by consumer groups, several state attorneys general as well as governors vowing to overturn the ruling.

As of last month, legislators in 26 states have introduced 59 bills in support of Net-neutrality rules.

The law means that national internet service providers (ISP) may have to have one set of operating policies for Washington and another for the other states in which they operate.

Six major tech companies, joining the legal battle over net neutrality, announced plans today to sue the US Federal Communications Commission.

"We know that when D.C. fails to act, Washington state has to do so", Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said before signing the measure, the Associated Press reported.

According to Wired, there are at least two dozen other states that are considering net neutrality bills. We are also very proud that OR is about to get a similar (albeit narrower) law.
