Law enforcement from the Napa County, Marin and the California Highway Patrol have surrounded the Veterans Home of California in Yountville, which is the largest veterans' residence community in the United States.

While the U.S.is still reeling from the Stoneman Douglas High Shool massacre in Florida, a precarious situation is unfolding at a Veterans' Home in Yountville, California.

California Highway Patrol and SWAT are on the scene.

Yountville is a small town home to wineries such as Domaine Chandon, which is less than a half-mile from the veterans home, and Thomas Keller's famed restaurant The French Laundry, which is about a mile away.

"There was an exchange of gunfire, fired by the suspect and our deputy", he said.

Kamer said he does not know why the shooter let his wife and some colleagues leave.

Police in northern California are responding to a hostage situation at a home for military veterans.

The Napa Valley Register reported the man was wearing body armour and reportedly armed with an automatic weapon.

There were no reported injuries, a Napa County Fire spokesman said.

Law enforcement representing multiple agencies have are staging around the scene. People on a nearby golf course were evacuated when the shooting began. He says officers are working to establish a secure perimeter around the facility and make sure others are safe.

There are around 850 residents at the Veterans home.

The Yountville Veterans Home is said the largest veterans' home in the country, according to its website.
