"Advances in superconducting magnets have put fusion energy potentially within reach, offering the prospect of a safe, carbon-free energy future", MIT President L. Rafael Reif said in the statement.

MIT researchers have teamed up with a new private company called Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) to carry out a rapid research project that they say could dramatically accelerate fusion energy technology.

Scientists have pursued nuclear fusion for decades but have been held back by funding cuts and technological roadblocks. It aims to create a fusion plant that doesn't rely on carbon fuels within 15 years.

Commonwealth Fusion CEO Robert Mumgaard said his company plans to crack the controlled-fusion puzzle "by leveraging the science that's already developed, collaborating with the right partners and tackling the problems step by step".

The team will use a new class of high-temperature superconductors they predict will allow them to create the world's first fusion reactor that produces more energy than needs to be put in to get the fusion reaction going.

"By putting the magnet development up front, we think that this gives you a really solid answer in three years", said Dennis Whyte, director of MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center, "and gives you a great amount of confidence moving forward that you're giving yourself the best possible chance of answering the key question, which is: Can you make net energy from a magnetically confined plasma?" However, that device uses up more energy than what gets churned out.

These magnets, formed from a newly-available superconducting material - a steel tape coated with yttrium-barium-copper oxide (YBCO) - will enable the construction of a much more compact version of a donut-shaped fusion chamber called a tokamak.

Gatwick Airport advice - check on your flights
Aer lingus flights will begin to wind down from three o'clock this afternoon, with other airlines following at 4pm. The extreme weather brought plunging temperatures and heavy snow with up to 40cm falling in some areas.

"The exciting part of this is the high-field magnets", Howard Wilson, a plasma physicist at York University, told The Guardian. One of the main difficulties is that net energy is only produced at extreme temperatures of hundreds of millions of degrees, which is too hot for any container to withstand.

In the past, it took lots of energy to power the magnets.

"The higher the magnetic field, the more compactly you can squeeze that fuel", said Wilson. The planned fusion experiment, called Sparc, is set to be far smaller - about 1/65th of the volume - than that of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor project, an international collaboration now being constructed in France. Because the mass of the new atom is less than the mass of the two constituent atoms, this fusion produces massive amounts of excess energy in the form of light and heat.

Unlike with fossil fuels, or nuclear fuel like uranium used in fission reactions, there will never be a shortage of hydrogen.

Maria Zuber, MIT's vice-president for research, added, "At the heart of today's news is a big idea - a credible, viable plan to achieve net positive energy for fusion", she said.

The reaction also does not create greenhouse gases or produce hazardous radioactive waste of the sort made by conventional nuclear fission reactors.
