  • Turkey finds proof of YPG PKK using children for terror

The move came as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened again to "purge" Kurdish militia from the town.

"Now our objective is Afrin". As of now, we have Afrin encircled.

There are seven population centers within Afrin District, and Turkey controls five of them at the moment. "Because of those terrorists, we were not safe on our own soil", Derkus said.

Ankara's go-it-alone campaign against the Kurdish People's Protection Units in a region called Afrin is reshaping military alignments in northern Syria and forcing the U.S.to pause its mop-up operations against pockets of the Islamic State extremist group.

Later on Friday, a spokesman for the YPG denied that the Afrin town had been besieged, and said several of the regions Turkey has claimed to have taken control of were still battlegrounds. "We can enter it at any moment", said Erdogan at the inauguration of the governing Justice and Development (AK) Party's Politics Academy in capital Ankara.

"Today, there were also clashes around Bulbul, where they announced around 30 days ago that they captured, occupied it", he said.

On Saturday, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said the Turkish forces were now four kilometres (2.5 miles) from Afrin town.

The military also said only terror targets are being destroyed and "utmost care" was being taken to not harm civilians.

"Now the centre of Afrin is surrounded and our entry is imminent", Erdogan said in televised speech in Ankara.

Turkey's foreign minister says his government hopes that a cross-border military offensive in a Syrian Kurdish-held enclave will end before May.

The operation "Olive Branch" was launched on January 20 to clear PYD/PKK and IS terrorists from Afrin in northwestern Syria, Anadolu news agency reported.

Earlier this month, Erdogan accused US President Donald Trump and his predecessor Barack Obama of failing to tell the truth over US support for the YPG.

Turkey regards the YPG as a terror group and a branch of militants in Turkey who have waged an insurgency for decades.
