"All the credit" for the meeting went to the Kenyan political leaders, Tillerson said, in response to a question as to whether the USA had a role in organising it.

The two leaders who had earlier held a lengthy closed door meeting said at a joint news conference that they were committed to join forces and heal divisions occasioned by two presidential elections in August and October previous year.

Kenyatta, for his part, said during the meeting that the solid friendship and cooperation that continues to deepen, only serves to encourage Kenya to strengthen its resolve to work together with the USA toward an even brighter future, the statement said.

Friday's meeting came hours before the arrival of US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson as part of his first Africa tour.

"We are, however, glad that the President and former PM have taken it upon themselves to ensure that we close that chapter of unnecessary exchange of words at the expense of growth and development in Kenya", he added.

In a statement posted to Facebook on Friday, he called the rapprochement "a fundamental betrayal of the innocent Kenyans who have lost their lives" supporting Odinga in several elections over the last decade.

Mr Mudavadi said that the meeting between Mr Odinga and Mr Kenyatta was not discussed through the Nasa structures.

Prominent anti-corruption campaigner John Githongo said it was hard to understand why the meeting happened now and he cautioned that "the devil is in the details". "We refuse to allow our diversity to kill our nation", he said.

"The US should not be dismissed or discounted".
