Jill Green holds a sign during a rally against a scheduled upcoming visit by President Donald Trump, Monday, March 12, 2018, in San Diego.

This isn't Trump's first visit to the border. She and other agents briefed the president on beefed-up security in California, Arizona and Texas over the years and cautioned that any changes need to preserve the ability to see what's happening on the other side.

The sections of wall, more imposing than the existing border barrier at 30 feet high, have undergone rigorous testing in the meantime at an undisclosed location.

In line with promises of new gear, Trump said the US would "lead again" on the final frontier and introduced his administration's strategy for space exploration "recognizes space is a war-fighting domain".

After his San Diego stop, Mr Trump will travel to Los Angeles to headline a political fundraiser in Beverly Hills. He'll be staying there overnight.

Trump has no plans to meet with Brown or other Democratic leaders of the state, which Trump lost to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016 by more than 4 million votes.

Around 100 protesters chanted, "No ban!"

Meanwhile, anti-Trump protesters gathered near the Plaza Las Americas mall in San Ysidro with signs including "love has no borders" and "no hate in the Golden State".

Those at the San Ysidro rally held up California immigration policies as ones that should be emulated on a national level - the same policies that have raised the ire of the Trump administration. Trump will inspect eight prototypes for his future wall project before meeting Marines later in the day.

But the top Democrat in the U.S. Senate, Chuck Schumer, said his party supported including funds for other border measures in an omnibus spending bill Congress must pass soon.

Ethnic cleansing of Rohingya continues
James Gomez, Amnesty International's director for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, said the UN's new findings "sadly echo our own". A recent report in The Irrawaddy claimed that at least 90 percent of the state's Rohingya population have fled.

The eight prototypes represent a cornerstone of Trump's campaign promise to build a "big, attractive wall" across the 2,000-mile southwestern USA border.

Faulconer's remarks appeared in a commentary published in The San Diego Union-Tribune. Organizers said they are gathering to express "Southern California's opposition to the attacks on civil liberties launched by the Trump Administration". "You could be two feet away from a criminal cartel and not even know they're there", he said.

The Republican brought a tough message on immigration to California during his first visit as U.S. president to the heavily Democratic state that has served as a base of resistance to many of his policies. Trump is scheduled to visit eight prototypes for the massive wall he wants built along the USA border with Mexico.

Another protest, called "Unwelcome Rally at Santa Monica Airport Park", will take place at that airport at about 2 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Times. The trip came amid an escalating battle between his administration and the liberal state, which has refused to help federal agents detain immigrants in the US illegally. He crosses the border from Mexico daily to work at a San Diego restaurant. Trump will examine prototypes of the wall he wants to build between the two countries.

On the Mexican side, federal police had to persuade around 50 demonstrators not to burn a yellow-haired pinata in Trump's likeness.

Tractor-trailer rigs have been parked along the USA side, blocking the view from Mexico. The event was organized in part by the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties.

President Donald Trump arrived in San Diego on Tuesday morning, kicking off his first visit to California since taking office.

However, San Diego saw activists already gathering Monday evening, and protests are planned on both sides of the border at the site where Trump will view border wall prototypes. Trump has insisted Mexico pay for the wall but Mexico has adamantly refused to consider the idea.

Trump's Justice Department last week sued the state over three of its immigration laws.
