The 46-year-old Argentine left the Premier League club on Monday after only one win in 17 league games.

The result leaves them just one place and one point above the relegation zone.

Whoever takes up the role will have a hard job on their hands to keep them in the English top-flight, especially as they still have to face Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City.

It is Hughes, though, who is the early favourite to be handed the task of rescuing the club from their parlous situation only a couple of months after he was sacked by Stoke City.

With the form Southampton have been in this year, Pellegrino's sacking has been more of an inevitability than anything else, but with only eight matches left in the season, it puts the club in an incredibly hard position.

Southampton have won only 1 of their last 17 matches, and their most recent outing was an incredibly underwhelming, 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St. James's Park.

"As far as the situation we are in at the moment, it makes sense to go with someone who has Premier League experience, who doesn't have to get to know a new set of players".

Southampton are reportedly interested in luring Brendan Rodgers back to the English Premier League.

Mark Hughes is in talks to become Southampton's next manager, Press Association Sport understands.

Another boss who lost his job earlier in the season, Slaven Bilic (formerly of West Ham), features in the upper echelons of the market, as does Gordon Strachan who remains a popular figure on the south coast having previously led the Saints to an FA Cup final and 8th place finish.

Pellegrino leaves St Mary's having won just eight of his 34 matches in charge, but the Argentine has acknowledged that he can not dispute being sacked by the South-coast club.
