  • Nikolas Cruz accused of murdering 17 people in the Florida high school shooting appears in court for a status hearing in Fort Lauderdale Fla. Cruz was formally charged Wednesday March 7 with 17 counts of first-degree

Newly released surveillance footage appears to support the Broward sheriff's account that a campus deputy rushed to the Parkland high school building where a mass shooting was unfolding - but never entered to engage the gunman.

The 27-minute video appears to show school resource deputy Scot Peterson outside of the building when the shooting took place, but not going into the building.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office released the video. They then drive away in a golf cart.

"The video speaks for itself", the Sheriff's office said in statement that also included the surveillance video.

Peterson resigned on February 22 rather than face suspension.

The video, which media organisations petitioned the judge overseeing the case to release, was released Thursday and does not provide incredible detail, but does show Mr Peterson as he hears about the shooting before speaking into a radio handset on his shoulder and rushing over to the site of the shooting. He said the question is why he didn't: was it because of Peterson's individual character or something about the culture in the Broward Sheriff's Office that made him avoid a deadly force situation?

A few days after the shooting, Israel issued a statement announcing Peterson's resignation and condemning the deputy for failing to prevent the shooting. On Wednesday, students across the United States participated in a 17-minute school walkout, that served both to protest what they view as a lack of political action, as well as to memorialize the victims of the attack.

Ellis "EJ" Mack, 18, was also arrested on charges of possession of a machine gun, but has not been charged in the mosque bombing. McWhorter reportedly told the authorities that Hari had promised his accomplices money for taking part in the bombing.

Israel offered no further comment about the video.

Sheriff Scott Israel said that the video showed the deputy doing "nothing" as the gunman killed 14 students and three educators.

"You don't know until you test it, but I think, I really believe I'd run in there, even if I didn't have a weapon, and I think most of the people in this room would have done that too", Trump said.

On Wednesday, Cruz was arraigned on 17 counts of premeditated murder in the first-degree and 17 counts of attempted murder in the first-degree.

Cruz, 19, chose to remain silent during a hearing in Broward County circuit court in Fort Lauderdale.

Officers from the Coral Springs Police Department, the first to arrive on the scene, pushed into the building anyway.
