  • Alzheimer's deaths in Oklahoma are rapidly rising

In 2017, 16 million Americans provided an estimated 18.4 billion hours of unpaid care in the form of physical, emotional and financial support - a contribution to the nation valued at $232.1 billion.

According to the latest published data from the Alzheimer's Association, 5.7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease today.

"This case was considered an outlier occurrence because people who suffered from dementia like illness then tended to be in the 70 to 80 age range", Ingram recalled.

"Whether a person has symptoms of Alzheimer's disease or not, if there are amyloid plaques, there is increased production of this soluble tau", Bateman said.

The third factor was syndicated newspaper columnist Dear Abby, who received a letter from someone signed "Confused" talking about their Alzheimer's symptoms and seeking help.

Hispanics are about one and one-half times as likely to have Alzheimer's or other dementias as older whites.

"While our report highlights a number of challenges that could affect the roll-out of future dementia treatments in the NHS, we believe these challenges can be overcome if we act now and work together".

The diagnosis cases are such strong that in every 65 seconds, some in the US gets diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia.

Tau is strongly linked to brain damage, so overproduction of the protein could be a critical step in the development of Alzheimer's, and reducing tau's production may help treat the disease, the researchers said.

Betanin, the compound that gives beets their distinctive red color could slow down the effects of Alzheimer's disease - the world's leading type of dementia.

Although deaths from other major causes have decreased significantly, official records indicate that deaths from Alzheimer's disease have increased significantly.

In Illinois, there were 3,686 deaths from Alzheimer's disease in 2015 - almost a 13 percent increase from 2014.

Forty-one percent of caregivers have a household income of $50,000 or less. The cause of the disease is still mostly unknown, but scientists suspect that a big contributor is beta-amyloid - a peptide that builds up in the brain and disrupts neuron communication, eventually killing them off. This impact of dementia caregiving is estimated to have resulted in $11.4 billion in health care costs in the United States in 2017.

Alzheimer's places a huge burden on the health care system, with annual costs exceeding a quarter of a trillion dollars.

The report estimates that past year the lifetime costs of an Alzheimer's patient were $329,360 and 70 percent of this was borne by the families. Seventy percent of the total lifetime cost it takes to care for Alzheimer's patients is borne by families. $186 billion of this is the cost to Medicare and Medicaid and $60 billion is personal expenditure. "The research with the iPSCs was really valuable, because we were able to ask questions about human neurons that we wouldn't be able to ask in living subjects", says Celeste Karch, an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine and one of the study's co- authors.

People with Alzheimer's or other dementias have twice as many hospital stays per year as other older people. "The disease is better managed, there are fewer complications from other chronic conditions, and unnecessary hospitalizations are avoided". He dances, does puzzles and has made a long-term plan for his care.

Early diagnosis of cognitive impairment provides a number of important benefits to diagnosed individuals, their caregivers and loved ones, as well as society as a whole.

The Alzheimer's Association commissioned researchers at Precision Health Economics to study the potential savings of obtaining an earlier diagnosis.
