He is likely to rule for many decades if he succeeds his father.

The Crown Prince has, however, won Western plaudits for seeking to ease Saudi Arabia's reliance on oil, tackle chronic corruption and reform the conservative Sunni Muslim kingdom.

Trump praised the 32 year old crown prince, popularly known as MBS, for his new role he gained after the grand political shake-up a few months ago in the desert peninsula of Saudi Arabia. The transfer was widely seen as a counterbalance against the influence of Iran in the region, and a "significant" and "historic" expansion of U.S. relations with Saudi Arabia (a major reason for Islamic terrorist attacks on USA targets since the first Gulf War).

During the meeting, a senior administration official said, the two leaders took up an array of thorny issues: Mr. Trump's coming decision on whether to rip up the Iran nuclear deal; Saudi Arabia's bitter dispute with its neighbor, Qatar; and the brutal civil war in Yemen, which has led lawmakers to propose a cutoff in American support for a Saudi-led bombing campaign that has killed thousands, New York Times reported.

The two leaders were also expected to discuss tensions with Iran, Riyadh's regional archrival and a country Trump has repeatedly criticized for its expansionist policies in the Middle East.

Trump offered an optimistic forecast of lucrative US arms sales to the kingdom and more Saudi investment in the United States.

On Sunday, Qassemi also claimed that Iran has "made extensive efforts for normalizing relations and creating a suitable climate for talks with Saudi Arabia, but unfortunately continuation of Saudi Arabia's illusions in the wake of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal shows the country's lack of adequate preparedness for talks with Iran to reach an understanding".

"Well, we're going to see what happens".

"Iran has not been treating that part of the world, or the world itself, appropriately", Trump said. A lot of bad things are happening in Iran.

Prince Mohammed and Kushner have forged a close relationship, which has at times come under criticism in Washington for circumventing normal diplomatic channels.

MBS, the crowned prince of Saudi believes in maintaining the US-Saudi alliance which started more than 80 years back.

In December, Saudi Arabia was able to intercept an Iranian missile launched by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, preventing it from entering Riyadh, potentially causing many casualties.

"Saudi Arabia is an indispensable partner in the region, without which the United States would be less successful", Lee said.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday praised U.S. defence sales to Saudi Arabia as a boost to American jobs, even as lawmakers criticised Riyadh's role in the war in Yemen where a humanitarian crisis has unfolded.

While in Washington, the crown prince will hold separate meetings with a long roster of influential USA officials, including the secretaries of defense, treasury and commerce, the Central Intelligence Agency chief and congressional leaders from both parties.

Trump noted that when he was in Riyadh last May the Saudis had promised a United States dollars 400 billion for the purchase of USA equipment.
