Trump says he is considering veto of $1.3 trillion budget

  • Republicans' silence on Trump will come back to bite them

McConnell, R-Ky., said Thursday that the spending legislation was a true compromise. After hours of delays, the Senate voted 67-30 to topple procedural hurdles to passage - seven votes more than the 60 that were needed.

Congress had to pass something before midnight Friday, or the federal government would have run out of money.

It was far short of the $25bn the White House had sought - and there are strings attached to the funding Congress has approved. Andrus was a four-term Democratic governor who died a year ago. "They would not do it", he said.

In response, the Senate passed language halting the renaming effort.

Lawmakers have left town on a two-week recess, some of them on overseas trips and with no plans to return to Washington.

Senate leaders are talking to Risch, hoping to resolve the issue and free the spending bill.

President Donald Trump has proposed reviving a long-stalled nuclear waste repository at Nevada's Yucca Mountain, 100 miles from Las Vegas. Even with the majority in both houses being Republican, you have a bunch of garbage like Schumer, Waters, Durbin, Schiff, N. Polosi, Feinstein, Cummins, Kennedy and Boxer.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell acknowledged that some of his GOP colleagues were unhappy with the spending bill, according to the article.

The bill would provide the federal government with funding for the remainder of the fiscal year, which ends September 30. That shipped the 2,232-page package to the Senate.

He voted against the measure, but House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi backed it. Twice this calendar year the government was allowed to slip into shutdown.

"With $1.6 billion included in the spending bill that arrives on President Trump's desk tomorrow, we're going to start to build that wall", Pence said to applause.

"Anyone who votes for the omnibus is voting for the deportation of Dreamers and other immigrants". Mick Mulvaney, director of the Office of Management and Budget, told reporters at the White House on Thursday afternoon.

Trump's strategy, now as ever, appears to be to cut young people off from their livelihoods and endanger their families in order to get Democrats and Republicans to the table, dangling hope in front of immigrants, but always snatching it away so long as he does not get his own actual prize: a big, lovely wall. His reason - because it didn't deal with immigration and didn't have enough money for his border wall. Trump, meanwhile, spoke with advisers, including Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, a supporter of the defense increases in the bill.

A sweeping $1.3 trillion budget bill that substantially boosts military and domestic spending but leaves behind young immigrant "Dreamers" has cleared a procedural hurdle.

The $1.3 trillion spending package passed the House 256-167, with the "no" votes coming from both sides of the aisle: 90 Republicans and 77 Democrats.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said, "the House just voted to rebuild our military, secure our borders, and give our service members their largest pay raise in 8 years".

Trump added, "To prevent the omnibus situation from ever happening again, I'm calling on Congress to give me a line item veto for all government spending bills and the senate must end - they must end - the filibuster rule and get down to work".

Another provision that didn't make it into the final text is a GOP plan to stabilize Obamacare health insurance markets and help provide coverage for patients with high medical costs.

The bill was introduced late Wednesday after weeks of haggling, leaving lawmakers mere hours to peruse and vote on a mega-bill that will touch every aspect of American life.

Trump teased a 1 p.m. "news conference" on Twitter Friday, where the official said he will sign the bill to avert a government shutdown at midnight.

Republican leaders have said that the spending caps President Obama and Congress agreed to in 2011 have hollowed out the military to the point where more military members are dying because of training and readiness issues than from combat.

On Friday, Trump cast doubt about the bill's fate by tweeting that he was considering a veto of the bill that has been regarded as a compromise bill by many Democrats and Republicans in Congress.
