Prominent retail conglomerate Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) announced Sunday that payment cards used by customers at Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue locations may have been compromised.

The incident is now contained, according to Saks, which also stressed in a statement that the hackers weren't able to gain access to its e-commerce or other digital platforms, nor to the payment systems of affiliated brands Home Outfitters or HBC Europe, nor at Hudson's Bay itself.

The Hudson's Bay Company will reach out to their customers and offer identity-protection services.

The majority of the cards compromised in the theft belong to the customers that shopped in NY and New Jersey, the cybersecurity firm said, calling the heist "among the biggest and most damaging to ever hit retail companies".

It is yet unknown how the attackers managed to compromise the cash register systems at the stores, but the most likely explanation is phishing (i.e., tricking employees into installing the malware themselves).

Syrian Army Frees Citizens Abducted by Terrorists in Ghouta
Since Feb. 19, more than 1,000 people have reportedly been killed in attacks by the regime and its allies in Eastern Ghouta. However, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the rebels were divided on a deal with Moscow.

Most of it coming from stores in NY and New Jersey.

More details can be found on Saks' website.

According to Gemini Advisory, the financial institutions involved have confirmed that the credit and debit card numbers are real and say most were stolen from stores in NY and New Jersey. The data breach also hit Saks Off Fifth stores. JokerStash is best known for being behind the hacks on Chipotle and Whole Foods. If we're asking the credit card processors as well as a retail chain to be vigilant, as a consumer, we need to be vigilant as well. The company said it was investigating and taking steps to contain the attack.

In January, the group struck Jason's Deli restaurants, when up to two million unique payment card numbers were stolen and put up for sale. According to Gemini Advisory, now only 90,000 Lord & Taylor and 35,000 Saks Fifth Avenue compromised records have been offered for sale to date. Close to 148 million consumers in the USA had personal info stolen, including driver's licenses, as part of last year's breach of Equifax the credit-rating company. For transactions that have taken place since your last statement, call the customer-service number on the back of the card or log into any online account you may have with the card issuer.

Some of those cards were used by their card owners as recently as a month ago, in one of the stores affected.
