Takahata died of lung cancer at 1:19 a.m.at a hospital in Tokyo, according to sources.

He also directed the comedy "My Neighbors the Yamadas", and the environmental drama "Pom Poko". Isao Takahata was Oscar-nominated for the film "The Tale of Princess Kaguya" in 2015 for Best-Animated Feature.

The film was based on Takahata's experience as a nine-year-old boy, fleeing a US air raid, barefoot and in pyjamas, amid piles of dead bodies in Okayama, western Japan, in 1945.

Born in Mie Prefecture and raised in Okayama Prefecture, Takahata graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1959, majoring in French literature.

Takahata made his debut as a director of anime in 1968 with Toei Animation's Horus: Prince of the Sun. Unlike Miyazaki, Takahata didn't draw his films himself; all the same, his talent was plain to see, his style of storytelling visibly distinct from Miyazaki's. A huge success the world over, Heidi was dubbed into approximately 20 languages, including Telugu and Tamil.

Grave of the Fireflies (1988).

Though they had their differences over the years, both Takahata and Miyazaki had a penchant for telling stories about strong-willed girls and women.

Isao Takahata's 'Grave of the Fireflies' will be broadcast on the Japanese TV series "Friday Road Show" on April 13. Based on the classic folktale "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter", the film was animated with a water-color-like beauty and fluidity seldom seen in commercial animation.

When work began on The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya in the late 2000s, it was originally supposed to be a double-feature with Miyazaki's The Wind Rises, then billed as the latter animator's final movie before his retirement.

Takahata was last associated as an artistic producer with Dutch animator Michael Dudok de Wit's dialogue-less feature The Red Turtle (2016).
