  • Police shot and killed a person in Crown

The metal object that was mistaken for a gun in a fatal shooting by officers in Brooklyn turned out to be the head of a welding torch, according to NYPD officials.

The chain of events that ended with Vassell dying at the corner of Utica Avenue and Montgomery Street began around 4:40 p.m. Wednesday when police responded to three 911 calls that described a black man in a brown jacket waving what the witnesses mistakenly described as a silver gun, Monahan said.

The footage appears to corroborate earlier assertions by Chief of Department Terence Monahan that Vassell "took a two-handed shooting stance and pointed an object at the approaching officers" seconds before he was killed. The younger Vassell's mental disability was allegedly well known by both his neighbors and local police, according to the Times report. "They should train them to protect life, to save life", Eric Vassell said in an interview with WABC-TV. "We need to check these police officers and lock them up".

Excerpts from the transcripts of 911 calls released by the New York City Police Department show that several callers reported a man with a "gun".

"There are a number of instances where police are responding with extreme violence toward people of color who show signs of mental health struggles".

New York's attorney general has opened an investigation into the death.

The shooting occurred shortly before 5:00 pm (2100 GMT) in Crown Heights, a predominantly black neighborhood in the heart of Brooklyn.

On Thursday night, protesters marched to NYPD's 71st precinct and demanded the release of the names of the officers involved in the shooting - and their badges.

Schneiderman's spokeswoman, Amy Spitalnick, promised "an independent, comprehensive and fair investigation". "But as a member of the armed forces, I believe the United States won as well", said Farhaj Hassan, a US Army reservist and the lead plaintiff in the 2012 lawsuit in federal court in Newark, New Jersey.

Experts say officers are not required to announce themselves, or order a suspect to drop a weapon, before opening fire.

"There's a guy walking around the street, he looks like he's insane but he's pointing something at people that looks like a gun and he's pulling the trigger", one of the callers said. "Everybody's got their First Amendment rights, and they can contribute to the candidate of their choice", said O'Neill, though he added, "The Special Victims Division is unique, and investigators have to maintain the confidence of the survivors of sexual assault". "The people who didn't know him, the gentrifiers, came into a community that wasn't theirs, and called 911 on Saheed". They should not train them to kill.

The police shooting of Stephon Clark, an unarmed black man, ignited protests in Sacramento, Calif., that have lasted weeks. Stephon Clark, 22, was shot by officers responding to a report of someone breaking auto windows.

Police said they thought he had a gun, but he was carrying only a cellphone when he was confronted in his grandmother's back yard.
