1 mission during his appearance before USA lawmakers on 10 April and 12 April will be to defend against calls to regulate internet-based companies.

If Zuckerberg does not provide satisfactory answers this week, Congress is more likely to push new legislation to strictly regulate Facebook.

Zuckerberg released a prepared testimony to the House of Energy and Commerce apologising for the data scandal and explaining what happened with Cambridge Analytica, how it happened and how Facebook will rectify the situation.

Facebook Inc chief executive Mark Zuckerberg swapped his trademark T-shirt and jeans for a dark suit and a purple tie on Monday as he met USA lawmakers to apologise for the social network's misuse of its members' data and to head off possible regulation.

"We didn't take a broad enough view of our responsibility, and that was a big mistake", Zuckerberg's statement says. "Yeah of course I'd like to know, it's my privacy and we're all entitled to that and we expect that when we sign up", said Daniel Regua, a Facebook user and resident of San Jose.

He's expected to concede that Facebook "didn't do enough" to prevent a host of problems on its platform, such as fake news, foreign interference in elections, hate speech and data privacy. Only now are they coming clean and informing those who have had their information compromised and telling us they are going to make things right.

"If we detect suspicious activity, we'll do a full forensic audit".

"If you don't control your platform, we're going to have to do something about it", California Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein told a gathering of Silicon Valley executives last week.

After receiving Facebook's response on Thursday, the government waited for London-based analytics firm CA's response to take a decision on the matter.

And it's not just Facebook where this can happen.

Facebook believes about 87 million users were affected. That was the giant loophole the British researcher legitimately used to access data but then unjustly sold to Cambridge Analytica.

In written testimony submitted prior to his congressional appearances this week, the Facebook CEO issued a sweeping apology for his company's blunders on election interference, privacy and fake news.

We asked Facebook Australia about the notification, and while it didn't have any specific details about when the affected Australians would be notified, the company did say it could be as early as today.

With backing from a bevy of funders, Facebook will form an outside commission of academic scholars who will then develop a research agenda about the impact of social media on democracy.

"The focus will be entirely forward looking". Before I talk about the steps we're taking to address them, I want to talk about how we got here.

But Brian Wieser of Pivotal Research said the entire digital advertising industry, of which Google and Facebook are the leaders, could be impacted by the scandal.

Associated Press reporters around the world have been surveying users, none of whom has reported seeing anything from Facebook.

Mark R. Warner, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, told WVTF Virginia Public Radio recently.
