  • Iranian Rial Hits Record Low; Dealers Stop Trading Dollar, Euro

Iranian President Rouhani attends a joint news confrence with his counterparts Erdogan of Turkey and Putin of Russian Federation after their meeting in Ankara Thomson Reuters LONDON (Reuters) - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Monday that U.S. President Donald Trump would regret it if he withdraws from a nuclear deal that Tehran and six world powers signed in 2015, as Iran's response would be stronger than imagined.

"Whether or not the JCPOA exists, whether or not it includes Europe, or (under) any other situation, there will be no problem created for the nuclear technology (of Iran) or the life of people", President Rouhani said on Monday. "Our response will be stronger than what they imagine and they would see that within a week", Rouhani is quoted as saying.

The rial had fallen to 47,000 to a dollar in early February from about 36,000 in mid-September on concerns about Iran's agreement with world powers to curb its nuclear program in return for the lifting of most global sanctions.

Trump said he would waive sanctions against Iran that were lifted as part of the global deal for the last time unless his conditions were met.

Reuters notes that "Iran has warned that it would ramp up its nuclear program if the JCPOA collapses, to achieve a more advanced level than before the deal".

USA sanctions that were lifted under the deal reached by Tehran and six world powers in July 2015 will be reinstated unless Trump waives them again on May 12.

"They spent huge amounts of dollars and talked a lot, and posted so many tweets, thinking that this building would shake with tweets", Rouhani said of the Trump administration.

China said that it supports an investigation into a suspected chemical attack on the Syrian rebel-held town of Douma that has provoked global outrage.

Iranians stand in front of a bank, hoping to buy US dollars at the new official exchange rate announced by the government, in downtown Tehran, Iran, Tuesday, April 10, 2018.

Their "threats confirm that the Iranian regime never gave up on its atomic weapon ambitions", he said. The U.S. dollar jumped to as much as 58,000 rials on the open market in the capital Tehran, according to some reports. Israel also destroyed the drone's remote guidance system and two additional Iranian targets in Syria. However, some analysts have suggested that the nuclear agreement would likely collapse altogether if the US decides to pull out.

Nephew, a former White House and State Department Iran sanctions expert, said legislation could be drafted that might appear to assuage Trump's concerns, but that getting Iran to agree to allow unfettered global inspections or to no time limits on the nuclear deal's restrictions was impossible. The Iranian ministry said the hack affected Europe, India, and the United States, according to state television.

Iran remains largely cut off from worldwide financial networks because of USA sanctions.

The missile attack followed a suspected poison gas attack on Saturday on the last remaining foothold for the Syrian opposition in the eastern suburbs of Damascus.
