  • Watch Video: Young girls jumping down a dance studio in New Jersey as fire tear through

First on the scene were Edgewater Police Officer Jimmy Dalton and a store owner, Tony Nehmi, who saw the girls pounding on the glass on the second floor. Smoke from the fire was reportedly seen in Manhattan. "I didn't know it [was] gonna be that bad".

"I was the one who called the fire department". Some are seen attempting to climb down on ladders.

The mayor of Edgewater Michael McPartland said it was "the bravest thing he had ever seen".

The fire is believed to have started on the first floor, where the Edgewater International Auto Body and a vehicle wash are located, before spreading to the rest of the building.

The girls were banging on the window with a small object, trying to break it, but they couldn't, Nehmi said. "There's no room for any mistake".

Small SUV safety ratings released
It said measures taken from the dummy show that an occupant would have likely sustained right hip injuries in a real-world crash. The Institute has used that process, known as test verification, to assign other types of ratings under certain circumstances.

But the flames were already too high and quickly approaching the dance studio where the girls were having class. Kesiktas and a friend joined several other people in rescuing the girls, setting up ladders and, when the flames got too high, encouraging them to jump from a second-story balcony to safety.

Nina Twomey, 12, was one of the last dance students to escape the fire by dangling from a second-story balcony until she fell to the ground below. Some children are seen jumping onto the ladders, and, eventually, the people on the balcony are forced to fall 10 feet to the ground below.

According to local Fire Chief, Steve Curry, five people were taken to a hospital for further medical attention.

The building housed a restaurant, dance studio, vehicle wash and auto body shop.

"They weren't able to make it", said Twomey.
