  • Strike on Syria air base kills 14, including Iranian forces: monitor

Syria and its military ally, Russia, have denied any chemical attack, but White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the U.S.is confident with its judgment that Syrian forces used a banned chemical weapon in the attack.

Assad regime forces struck targets in the Damascus suburb's Douma district on Saturday midnight using a poisonous gas, which left at least 78 civilians dead, according to the White Helmets, a local civil defense agency. Vice President Mike Pence will attend in his stead.

The military commanders of Damascus and Russian Federation denounced the event, considered it a montage and warned that it is illegal actions of the West to condition the public opinion and carry out a new aggression against the Syrian territory.

"Russia has warned USA representatives, both publicly and via corresponding channels, including military ones, about serious consequences that might follow possible strikes [on Syria], if Russian citizens are hurt in such strikes, accidentally or not", he said in an interview with Euronews.

According to four US officials who spoke with the news agency, Russian Federation first started jamming American drones several weeks ago because the military feared USA retaliation following a series of chemical weapons attacks on civilians in eastern Ghouta.

A United States action similar to last year's would likely not cause a shift in the direction of the war that has gone Assad's way since 2015.
